Mention reporting, business intelligence or analytics to most companies that use Progress OpenEdge and you’ll likely get a raised eyebrows and a sharp intake of breath. It’s no wonder, with BI platforms connected to the operational database prone to serious performance issues that threaten the usability of the business application and a history of vendors that have exited the space leaving customers without a path to upgrade or maintain their existing work.
Speak to many consultants today, and you’ll likely be offered some middleware to either replicate your data elsewhere or transform your data into a format any generic BI solution will consume. Whilst these solutions are workable, even desirable in some situations they're highly prescriptive, reducing the ability of business users to ask unanticipated questions, and expensive and complex to implement.
At DataPA we don’t believe it has to be this way. Your OpenEdge database and its management engine are brilliant at managing huge datasets, and will often have most your data already loaded into memory for swift access. Those of us familiar with the ABL would also argue there’s no better tool to express business rules required in any BI or Analytics solution. Given this, surely the only reason you would need the expense and hassle of a middleware tool or repository is a failing on the part of the analytics product, not the database engine?
That’s why if you ask our customers about business intelligence and analytics we think you’ll get a very different response. We believe your use of OpenEdge should be an advantage, not a hindrance when it comes to Analytics. That’s why we work tirelessly to make sure OpenAnalytics constantly pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, introducing live analytics, mobile apps, collaboration and intelligent alerts well ahead of most competitors. Our product and company is growing up. We understand that most companies have data in multiple repositories so we support all the standard connectivity you'd expect from a modern Analytics product. Yet we have, and always will, stay true to our belief in OpenEdge, providing native connectivity via the AppServer and using the power of the ABL to build powerful analytics
If you’ve never had a good look at DataPA OpenAnalytics, why not take a look and change your perspective of Business Intelligence and Analytics?
